Removed Sites

Most websites survive for less than two years and then disappear from the internet. The main reason for this is that the majority of sites, especially new sites, get very little traffic, so that their owners become discouraged and begin to lose interest. Although fees and other costs are usually not excessive, many owners will nevertheless decide to stop paying them and thus allow their site to expire. In addition, a website is sometimes purchased or taken over by a new owner who then converts it into a completely different type of site.

This page was created to keep a record of entries that have been removed from the main directory because the site either disappeared from the web or was converted to another type of site.

Note: The Internet Archive Wayback Machine has permanent copies of billions of old web pages, and this provides a way for you to look at the pages of past sites that no longer survive. To do so, you simply enter the original internet address (URL) of the page that you want to look at. In this way you can see what was on these removed sites before they disappeared from the web.

The following list contains the date of a site's removal, my original description of it, and the URL of the former site or page.

Atheist Dictionary - The definitions in this dictionary reflect an atheist's view of religion. Many of them are very funny. [ URL = http://www.atheistdictionary.com/ ]

Secular Party of America - This organization was originally formed in 2011 under the name "National Atheist Party", and transitioned to its current name in 2013. It intends to represent the interests of U.S. secularists and other freethinkers in the American political process. For this purpose, it plans to support candidates for political office who hold secular progressive views, and who will base their decisions on reason rather than religious dogma. Its charter states that it will always operate within the Constitution and laws of the United States, and that it is open to people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures. Its website includes a newsletter, a directory of state chapters, and a forum. [ URL = http://secularamerica.org/ ]

Removed 02-23-2014:
Atheist at Large - When atheists attempt to promote their views to the general public, they often encounter hostility from religious and political organizations, especially in the United States. Sometimes the resulting conflict leads to protest demonstrations, legal actions, and even violence. This website provides coverage of many of these conflicts as they arise, often with commentary on what they reveal about the current state of society. There are also some interesting general articles relating to the evolving competition between atheism and religion in the modern world. [ URL = http://atheistatlarge.org/ ]

Secular News Daily - The purpose of this site is to present current news stories from a secular point of view. The scope is rather general, with a broad coverage of social, political, and religious news, but there is a tendency to emphasize controversial issues. The site is an especially good resource for anyone who wants to stay informed about developments in the vicious culture wars currently taking place in the United States. [URL = http://www.secularnewsdaily.com/ ]

Removed 6-30-2016:
Atheism Plus - Members of this freethought community hope to bring more attention to important social issues such as racism, sexism, and poverty. For this reason, many of the forum discussions center on how atheists and other secularists can help promote social justice and thereby improve the lives of all members of society. In addition to the forums, there is also a wiki which any registered user may edit. [URL = http://atheismplus.com/ ]

Removed 11-14-2016:
Atheist Movies - Actually this blog covers not only movies, but also books and documentaries. It tends to focus on books and films that have potential to educate the public and thereby influence the future evolution of society and culture. For this reason, this blog can be an excellent guide in helping you choose which books to read and what movies to see. And if you don't have time for a lot of reading or movie-watching, this is a good place to at least find out what you're missing. [URL = http://atheistmovies.blogspot.com/ ]

Atheist Oasis - People interested in religion, atheism, and skepticism can come to this site to discuss recent news events, social issues, and related matters. Two continuing topics of discussion are the attempts by Christians to inject their superstitious beliefs into official government policies, and the efforts by the non-religious to maintain separation of church and state. The operators of the site post frequent reports on the political activities of fundamentalist Christians, and these often lead to new debates. [URL = https://atheistoasis.wordpress.com/ ]

Removed 3-28-2017
About Agnosticism and Atheism - This is a section of the giant encyclopedia-type About.com website. It contains many basic articles about atheism, plus news articles submitted by free-lance writers, and the total amount of accumulated material has gradually become very large. The main goal of the owners of this site is to make money from ads, but various contributors have done a good job of filling this particular section with useful information, and it is one of the most-visited spots on the web for people seeking knowledge about atheism. [URL = http://atheism.about.com/ ]

Removed 4-26-2017
Positive Atheism - The articles on this site were written by the long-time atheist activist Cliff Walker, and most of them were originally published in the print journal Positive Atheism. Due to the poor health of the author (now deceased), the journal is no longer published, but the articles are available on the website. Many of them are intended to encourage the struggle against anti-atheist bigotry. [URL = http://www.positiveatheism.org ]

Assertive Atheism - Pushy bible-thumpers and obnoxious fundies need to be careful about who they try to spew their nonsense to, because atheists know how to retaliate. In fact, in debates with Christians, atheists always have a big advantage because truth is on their side, whereas Christianity is based on lies and deceptions. Unfortunately, there was a time when anyone who questioned Christian beliefs would likely be tortured and killed. But thanks to the efforts of many brave people, we now live in a more tolerant era, and in most modern societies atheists can be assertive without fearing for their lives. For a good example of an atheist who doesn't pull any punches, go to this website. [URL = http://www.flamewarrior.com/warning.htm ]
